Marana board approves staffing, grants and policy updates in August meeting

At its August meeting, the Marana Unified School District governing board approved a series of staffing, grant and governance items intended to support the district’s expansion and start of the 2025–26 school year.
Key approvals included additional classroom hires to respond to increased enrollment (multiple K–3 positions at DeGrazia, Rattlesnake Ridge, Tangerine Farms and Twin Peaks), a 0.6 FTE grant site coordinator funded by a 21st Century grant, and transportation staffing additions — three special-needs bus drivers and four attendants funded from the M&O budget — to support growing special-needs routing. The board also approved adding a girls flag-football coach at Marana (Miranda) High School, funded through tax-credit contributions tied to participation.
The board accepted an Arizona Reads kindergarten home library grant MOU to provide books and family literacy activities at Ironwood and Roadrunner elementaries; the MOU and grant are intended to promote early literacy and track kindergarten growth with non-identifiable, FERPA-compliant data. Trustees approved revisions to policy GCBD governing professional/support staff fringe benefits following legal review. The board appointed Thomas Bogart as a class 2 director to the Marana Schools 2340 Foundation and named Catherine Micronas as the district delegate (Kathy Raymond alternate) for the Arizona School Boards Association delegate assembly on Sept. 6, 2025. The board also approved an ADE entity-profile update for MCAT High School to align its mission statement with state records after an internal ADE audit.
Most motions were moved, seconded and approved by voice vote; administration said grant-funded and M&O resources will cover the new positions. The board confirmed upcoming regular meeting dates and a study session scheduled in two weeks.
