Students, staff report back-to-school activities and staffing needs at Dexter board meeting

At the Aug. 25 Dexter Community School District Board of Education meeting, district administrators and student representatives gave updates on the start of the school year, extracurricular activities and staffing needs.
S4 reported that teachers returned for weeklong professional development focused on curriculum mapping to strengthen horizontal and vertical alignment. S4 said sports seasons are underway and that staff were addressing a county-wide registration/consortium error that caused some classes to ‘disappear’ from schedules; S4 said staff were working to fix the problem promptly.
Student speaker S5 described senior activities, including a decorated senior parking lot that students suggested should be photographed from a drone, a senior sunrise event at 6:45 a.m. on the first day of school, and the availability of athletics schedules on a student Instagram account. Student representative S2 said the National Honor Society is seeking a new adviser (applications close the night of the meeting) and that the advisory program may change in scope next semester. Other students and board members noted ongoing club activity and homecoming planning.
Board members thanked staff and volunteers for back-to-school work, shared brief reports from recent events (cross-country invitational, opening day), and encouraged colleagues to register for an upcoming institute in Lansing. No public comments were made during either public participation period.
The board’s packet also included facility committee minutes and a back-to-school wayfinder; S1 suggested linking the packet on the district Facebook page for wider access. The board did not hold a closed session and moved to adjourn after the information items.
