Utah County commissioners approved an interlocal contract amendment to add Spanish Fork — and to pursue a similar agreement with Mapleton — to the county's fire and ambulance response map.
County legal staff explained the action transfers certain unincorporated areas in the county’s fire-response map to Spanish Fork and Mapleton after Springville declined to participate in the interlocal agreement. An attorney for the sheriff’s office said the change is intended to ensure more consistent emergency coverage in remote response areas; "They shouldn't see any difference or change in service. It'll all go through dispatch and dispatch will route it through the appropriate fire response agency," the attorney said.
Staff said reimbursement policies are governed by the state forestry and fire response manual and acknowledged the county is working with fire marshals and local cities to adjust rates where needed so responding agencies are adequately reimbursed. The sheriff's-office counsel said the county is "working with our fire marshal" and other partners to "tweak" reimbursement provisions so agencies are compensated for services outside of their jurisdictions.
The board voted to approve the contract amendment after brief discussion. The chair called for a motion and received recorded affirmative voice votes.
