Council orders repair or demolition for multiple dilapidated properties after public hearings

The Sweetwater City Council held a series of public hearings Aug. 12 and voted to declare multiple properties dilapidated or unfit for human habitation and to order repair, rehabilitation or demolition within 35 days.
Code enforcement staff testified about notification attempts and lack of owner response for each property. For 609 Oak Street, staff said a notice was sent June 18 and a follow-up on July 25 with no owner contact; the council voted to declare the property dilapidated and set a 35-day compliance period. Similar testimony and outcomes applied to 2100 Bristol Street (letters retained July 5 and delivered July 25), 404 East 12th Street (first warning June 7), 808 Haskell Street (no owner response; property unoccupied), and 201 Orange Street (staff had worked with the owner since January with limited progress).
During each public hearing the council asked for public comment, received none, closed the hearing and then voted. The motions carried by voice vote for each property.
Samantha Morrow administered oaths to code enforcement officers before hearings began. Staff said demolition or abatement would proceed if owners do not take corrective action within the allotted 35 days.
