The Newton City Commission voted to accept a Historic Preservation Fund grant to expand the city’s walking-tour project.
Staff explained the $15,640 grant will fund additional listening elements, updated visuals and signage for the pocket-sites walking tour. The award carries a 40% match requirement that staff told commissioners can be satisfied primarily with in-kind staff time and, if necessary, volunteer hours.
The presenter said the city has used similar grants frequently in recent years for preservation education and surveying. Commissioners asked whether the match would require cash from reserves; staff clarified the match is expected to come from existing departmental salary allocations and in-kind hours. The commission moved to approve the grant agreement and the motion passed on a voice vote.
Staff said they will manage grant tasks through existing staff and will return with any required administrative updates.
