Goldsboro prepares welcome for Cycle NC riders on Oct. 9; downtown camping planned

Goldsboro officials briefed City Council on Aug. 18 about Cycle NC (Mountains-to-Sea) rolling into downtown on Thursday, Oct. 9, with a downtown welcome party, a volunteer cheering committee and an expected 800 to 900 riders.
Amanda Justice of the tourism office said roughly 200 cyclists will stay in hotels while 600 to 700 will camp downtown at Freedom Field; organizers plan an archway arrival, a band and volunteer welcome activities. Safety planning includes two officers assigned overnight coverage and a 40-by-40 tent for shelter in the event of inclement weather; city departments including police, fire, parks and public works are supporting the event.
Council members asked about volunteer needs, street closures and whether the city paid any application fees; staff confirmed the tourism office is the sponsor of record and no city fee was charged. "We're hoping that the cyclists will then go out into downtown and spend some of their dollars," Justice said, noting the event is intended to boost downtown businesses and community engagement.
What's next: The tourism office will recruit volunteers, finalize the safety plan and coordinate with police and public works for the Oct. 9 visit.
