Council directs $50,000 in nonprofit funding to United Way's UCAN program

United Way executive director Sherry Archibald presented two options for how the city's $50,000 could be distributed: flow the funds through United Way's community campaign (with the board selecting one or two programs within health, financial stability, education or basic needs), or use the funds to support UCAN, a case-management program that connects residents to emergency rent, utility or transportation assistance and services. Archibald noted UCAN was partially seeded by grants from the Duke Energy Foundation and Blue Cross Blue Shield and already has criteria for assistance.
Council members discussed splitting the amount, administrative compliance overhead for small grants, and the desire to reach more people quickly. "Me personally, I think the money will be best used through the UCAN," Councilwoman Weeks said before making the motion to allocate the full amount to UCAN.
The motion carried 7-0.
