Stevens County Historical Society outlines exhibits, asks for continued county support

Gary Wall, executive director of the Stevens County Historical Society, briefed the Stevens County Board on the society's activities and funding request for 2026. He said the society preserves county artifacts, maintains a newspaper archive and reading room, and continues digitization and public programming.
"The Historical Society's mission is to collect, preserve, and share the history of Stevens County," Wall said, and noted the organization holds more than 40,000 artifacts and an extensive newspaper archive. He described rotating and permanent exhibits — the current show chronicles local entertainment and recreation — and highlighted educational programming for school groups and daycare visits.
Wall thanked the county for prior support and said the society's 2025 county contribution was reported in the meeting packet; he requested an increase for 2026 to cover cost‑of‑living and program expenses. He described recent collaborative projects with the VFW, publication of a county map puzzle and plans for a township-tour program this fall.
Commissioners expressed appreciation for the society's outreach and preservation work. The presentation was placed on the record for the county budget process; no final appropriation was decided during the meeting.
