Board adopts budget, audit and multiple contracts; approves construction change and mileage increase

At its Sept. 22 meeting the Catawba County Board of Education unanimously approved the 2025–26 budget resolution and 2024–25 audit, authorized several contracts and change orders (including auditorium lighting and Claremont HVAC adjustments), and approved a mileage reimbursement increase to $1.85 per mile starting Jan. 1, 2026.
The Catawba County Board of Education adopted the fiscal year 2025–26 budget resolution and approved several financial and construction items during its Sept. 22 meeting.
The board unanimously adopted the 2025–26 budget resolution after it was presented in the meeting packet and at the earlier work session. The board also approved the 2024–25 final audit report presented by auditor Andy Deal of Anderson Smith & White.
Contract and construction approvals included a TIPS USA cooperative contract with Barbizon Lighting for auditorium lighting repairs and upgrades at Maiden High School. Dan Moore said the fixtures carry a five-year warranty, LED arrays have a 10-year warranty, certain 20-amp relay modules have a two-year warranty, and the project total is $133,174.36. The board approved the contract unanimously.
The board approved a construction change directive No. 3 for the new HVAC systems at Claremont Elementary School reflecting a lump-sum decrease of $460,584.24; Dan Moore said the final contract sum for that project is $608,415.76 after the deduction. The board also approved a proposal for a sawmill building at Fred T. Ford High School from Neil Construction for $224,276 with a general contingency of $7,500.
On transportation, the board approved an increase to the activity reimbursement rate from $1.50 to $1.85 per mile beginning Jan. 1, 2026, following a request from Transportation Director Brett Huffman.
Other items approved without dissent included routine personnel recommendations, naming the Bunker Hill High School football press box (as requested by the committee), and the board's voting delegates for the North Carolina School Boards Association delegate assembly.
All recorded motions related to these items were approved by raise-of-hand votes and recorded as unanimous on the record.
