Commissioners target state disaster funds for dredging, evacuation routes and public-safety projects

Staff and consultants emphasized that projects must be tied to storm damage to qualify; they recommended separate public hearings and separate grant applications for each project so applications remain concise and competitive. One staff member estimated the county might request substantially more than $5 million for dredging and suggested seeking more than $12 million overall based on current needs and bid indications.

The board directed staff to pursue updated hydrographic data, refine project lists, consult with USACE where relevant, and prepare pre-application materials and public hearings to position the county to apply competitively. No final grant award was requested at the meeting; staff indicated applications and further design work would follow.
