Stewartville board hears plan for standards-based grading and 3-2-1 ‘Tiger Score’ behavior pilot

Stewartville Public School District presented an expanded standards-based grading and reporting plan that would separate academic grades from behavior and pilot a districtwide "Tiger Score" behavior rubric.
"Our focus is to separate the academic portion of our standards from the behavior portion of what our expectations are in our classroom," a secondary administrator said while outlining the initiative. The Tiger Score would rate students 3, 2 or 1 across three behavior categories — accountable, respectful and engaged — with mid-quarter reporting to families during the pilot year.
District leaders emphasized the academic grade would remain separate from the Tiger Score and would still be reported as a letter grade on official transcripts. "The TIGER score 3 2 1 is not calculated at all into those percentages," an administrator said, adding Skyward formulas will translate standards-based scores into conventional letter grades and GPA for transcripts and college reporting.
Presenters said elementary and secondary teams have prioritized standards, created learning targets and aligned unit pacing and assessments to better show what students know. Secondary administrators described PLC work to develop assessments and move toward consistent grading practices across teachers.
The district plans to pilot Tiger Score behavior reporting to all staff in fall 2025–26, with standards-based report cards for K–12 targeted for June 2027 and family-facing rollout in September 2027. Administrators said strong parent communication (newsletters, live sessions and videos) will be necessary to address questions about the new format.
Board members raised questions about how 3/2/1 scores map to letter grades and GPA; administrators said formulas in the student information system will aggregate standards scores and that transcripts will include only the academic portion.
Board discussion included support for the work and a reminder that the district still has "some work to be done" on implementation details and messaging before districtwide rollout.
