Beech Grove honors students of the month and unveils redesigned Hornet Blast

Students from across Beech Grove schools were recognized at the January board meeting during the Superintendent’s student-of-the-month segment, and the district unveiled a redesigned communications newsletter intended to increase family engagement.
Mitzi Garman, the district’s director of communications and community engagement, led the student recognitions and walked the board through a preview of the new Hornet Blast newsletter, citing a translated, mobile-friendly layout and school-specific sections so families can focus on relevant items.
"This is the best part of the board meeting," Mitzi Garman said as she introduced honorees. Among those recognized: Jocelyn at Hornet Park (praised by principal Rob Adamson and multiple teachers for leadership and kindness); Evie, a South Grove fourth grader nominated by her homeroom teacher for hard work and creativity; Lyric Wright at Beech Grove Middle School; and Emily Manaya at the high school, who moved to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic in August and earned the highest EL1 final exam score in her course.
Rob Adamson praised Jocelyn’s leadership and steady attitude: "Jocelyn is such a kind leader and she is always doing the right thing," he said.
Garman said the new Hornet Blast will launch on Friday and will include a table of contents, photo galleries and links to district resources. She asked the community for feedback as the district refines the format and noted plans for a "Hornet Blast Mini" distributed to community locations as a front-and-back summary of news.
Calendar items announced during the segment included a community day set for Wednesday, April 16, Teacher of the Year interviews and a retirement celebration scheduled for Wednesday, May 7.
The student recognitions were celebratory and noncontroversial; the communications changes are intended as an ongoing improvement and the district asked for community feedback before the next issues are published.
