Contractor awarded to build student health and educational building; construction could begin this fall

Revel Builders told the Southampton County School Board on Aug. 11 it has been awarded the contract to build the division’s new student health and educational building and field house, a pre‑engineered metal structure sited near the tennis courts and baseball field.
Mark James of Revel Builders summarized next steps: the company has ordered the pre‑engineered metal building, submitted required design materials to an independent engineer for foundation design, and completed preliminary plumbing, mechanical and HVAC planning. "We're looking at probably a process of at the earliest probably, September, but sometime, hopefully, October, we'll have a complete set of plans that we can get a building permit and we can start construction," James said. He estimated construction will take roughly four to six months once it begins.
James said the footprint is slightly larger than previously approved site plans required, so a minor site‑plan modification may be filed; the firm noted experience building in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. Board members thanked facilities staff for bringing the project forward and asked for ongoing updates as permitting and site modifications are completed.
Staff did not provide detailed contract dollar amounts during the announcement; the board asked for follow‑up on permitting timeline and expected occupancy dates.
