Superintendent praises start of school year, board welcomes Dr. Thorpe; consent items approved and meeting moves to closed session

The superintendent opened his report by highlighting a positive first day of school across the district and thanking staff and principals for their work, then introduced Dr. Thorpe to the board.

“...our public school communities are priceless,” the superintendent said, stressing intentional investment of resources and staff time as the district starts the year. He invited board members to engage in strategic planning with the leadership team.

Dr. Thorpe, introduced to the board and public, described visits to several campuses, praised principals and staff for strong procedures and student engagement, and noted an operational concern: transportation backups tied to a left-turn lane and a recently installed barrier on Highway 74 that caused buses to queue. Dr. Thorpe said transportation staff had contacted the Department of Transportation about signal timing to reduce delays.

Later the board considered action items and approved two consent items: the personnel report (item 01) and a sole-source purchase recommended from RealityWorks Incorporated (item 02). The chair called for a motion and second; members signified approval by saying “aye,” and the consent items were approved.

Before adjournment, the chair moved that the board return to closed session for personnel matters pursuant to North Carolina General Statute §143-318.11(a)(6). After a second and a call for the vote, members signified assent and the motion carried.

The meeting recessed into closed session for personnel; no further open-session actions were recorded in the transcript.
