Danville schools report sharp drop in missing immunization records to 21 students

Pamela Saunders, Danville Public Schools' public health and wellness coordinator, briefed the school board Sept. 4 on immunization records and district follow-up efforts.
Saunders said that in October 2024 the district identified 1,291 students for whom immunization records were missing or not in PowerSchool. By June 2025 that count had fallen to 383, and "as of last month, we're down to 21 that are actually missing some type of immunizations," she said, attributing the improvement to school nurses, administrators and outreach to families and providers.
Saunders explained that some of the remaining cases reflect communication gaps rather than lack of vaccination — for example, when a family obtains an immunization at a clinic but the provider does not upload the record to the Virginia immunization system or a parent has not yet returned documentation to the school. The district has sent flyers and letters (May, July 25, Aug. 14) and continues daily reconciliation between PowerSchool and the state immunization system.
Board members offered no substantive objection; the report concluded with thanks to the nursing team and staff who worked on records and outreach.
