The Danville Public Schools board approved a proclamation recognizing Sept. 15–Oct. 15, 2025, as Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month and heard a presentation outlining district activities tied to the observance. "Hispanic Heritage Month is a time for us to recognize and celebrate the diverse culture, history, and contributions of Hispanics and Latinos," Miss Simmons told the board.
Miss Simmons described school-level plans including literature and music lessons, cultural arts like papel picado, student performances and flag identification activities. She announced "our inaugural Hispanic heritage event on October 4 at Bonnar Middle School from 9 to 12," and introduced student interpreter Emmanuel Leguiziman.
A signed gubernatorial proclamation was read aloud acknowledging the statewide observance and the role of the Virginia Latino Advisory Board. The board responded with applause and will support school events, including multicultural nights and heritage celebrations at multiple schools through October.
No formal policy decisions were made; the action taken at the meeting was approval of the proclamation recognizing the observance.
