Council proclaims Suicide Prevention Month and Hispanic Heritage Month; staff promotes local events

The Saint Helena City Council issued two proclamations and heard community announcements during its meeting.
Suicide Prevention Month: The council proclaimed September 2025 as Suicide Prevention Month. Jen Nielsen, prevention director at Mentis and chair of the Napa County Suicide Prevention Council, thanked the council and described a Sept. 17 conference in Yountville that will target high-risk groups and include a training from the Trevor Project. "Suicide does not discriminate," Nielsen said, urging outreach to vulnerable populations.
Hispanic Heritage Month: The council proclaimed Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month for the city. Oscar de Ardo accepted the proclamation on behalf of the Latino community, praised long-standing local Latino businesses and urged vigilance about tensions between Latino communities and federal immigration enforcement.
Community events: Staff highlighted a Mexican Independence Day celebration on Sept. 16 and a community academy beginning Oct. 1; Anthony Michele described the upcoming Sons of Italy festival and asked for council and staff participation.
