El Campo accepts three county-held parcels for $15M drainage project

The El Campo City Council on Sept. 22 approved Resolution R2025-48 to accept three properties currently held in trust by Wharton County for use in a $15,000,000 drainage-improvement project.
Staff displayed exhibit maps showing the parcels' positions along a creek and explained the parcels are identified to secure right-of-way or project footprint without immediate purchase costs; staff said accepting the trust-held parcels transfers them to the city rather than paying the county to acquire them. Parcel sizes discussed included approximately 3.35 acres for one parcel, 1.47 acres for another, and a small triangular parcel of about 0.0813 acres; staff cautioned the smallest parcel is likely not marketable post-project.
Council members asked about potential maintenance burdens and whether the city might later replat or market surplus land after project completion. Staff said maintenance obligations will be clearer after project scoping. The council moved, seconded and approved the resolution by voice vote.
