East Ridge council adopts 2023 National Electrical Code
Summary
On Sept. 25 the East Ridge City Council unanimously adopted Ordinance 12-32 to replace the 2017 National Electrical Code with the 2023 NEC, bringing the city within state exemption requirements and authorizing updated enforcement standards for electrical work.
The East Ridge City Council voted unanimously Sept. 25 to adopt the 2023 National Electrical Code as the city’s official electrical code.
Mister Hale summarized that because East Ridge is an exempt municipality under state requirements the city must adopt a code within seven years of publication; the council had been operating under the 2017 NEC and will update to the 2023 edition to comply with the seven-year rule. Council member Ezell moved the ordinance and Council member Witt seconded; Miss Dietrich recorded a unanimous roll-call vote.
The adoption updates technical standards the city enforces for electrical installations and is intended to keep inspections and permitting aligned with the most recently published national standard. Staff said the move was required by the city’s exemption status with state fire marshal rules and noted the next NEC publication could require another update in a subsequent cycle.
Ordinance 12-32 passed on second and final reading Sept. 25 and takes effect under the city’s standard ordinance-adoption timeline. City staff said they will update permitting, inspection checklists and public guidance to reflect the 2023 provisions.
