Board highlights student achievements, approves personnel blocks and outlines digital‑literacy and athletics training plans

At the May 27 meeting, board members recognized multiple student achievements—young writers contest winners and Nassau County track and field champions—and the superintendent introduced Eric Banks, recommended for appointment as Elmont Memorial High School’s athletic director and chair of physical education and health.

The board approved motions covering curriculum items A–M, finance and operations A–G, personnel professional items A–V, civil service A–Q and support services A–C by voice vote. Earlier in the meeting the board also authorized a professional membership affiliation agreement with SCOPE Education Services.

During public comment and board discussion, the superintendent described steps the district is taking to enhance safety and oversight for athletics and competitions: implicit‑bias clinics for coaches, workshops for student athletes, partnerships with organizations such as Erase Racism and Power of Words, and the establishment of five committees (one per building) that will report to principals and appear on PTA agendas beginning July 1. The superintendent said coaches will be empowered to end contests if conditions warrant, and he indicated he will seek additional feedback and data from Section 8 about referee feedback mechanisms.

The superintendent also announced curriculum planning tied to the governor’s cellphone rule: a June 9 parent meeting and a new digital‑responsibility unit for seventh grade to be implemented in September to teach students about social‑media footprints, appropriate device use and the impact of digital addiction.

Next steps include formalizing the appointment for Eric Banks (personnel agenda) and continuing staff training and PTA reporting under the newly formed building committees.
