Recycling committee reports steady programs, HHW event and textile recycling gains

The town’s Recycling and Solid Waste Committee reported a busy year and a return to full membership at the Sept. 23 selectmen meeting.
Chair Sherry Cheney said single-stream recycling is performing well and that the town distributed 39 well-testing kits at a committee event (25 returned to the lab). The committee announced the household hazardous-waste day for Nov. 15 (08:30–13:00) at the DPW facility and noted that working with partner Ha nn a ford/Trex has allowed the town to recycle film plastic and plan for Trex lumber rewards; the program currently collects about 215 pounds of film plastic per month. The committee also reported a long-running textile pickup partnership that has yielded 16,016 pounds of textiles since 2022.
The committee reviewed its role in the solid-waste contract transition and said it provided comments on the RFP and bid review, noting the limited competition in the market and two bids received (Casella and Waste Management). Cheney said the household hazardous-waste day remains one of the committee’s largest activities and that the town budget impact for compost and related services remains low (about $104/month).
