BVSD DAC executive team outlines SAC alignment, family engagement and three policy cycles

The Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) board met Sept. 9 and held a work session with the District Accountability Committee (DAC) executive team, which detailed plans to strengthen school‑level Site Accountability Committees (SACs), heighten family engagement, and accelerate policy work on homework, the basic instructional program and grading.
DAC co‑chairs Allie Broin and Felicia Gorman said the committee has 53 members representing 56 schools and is focused on making SACs more usable and impactful. Broin said the DAC will pilot guidance and training for SACs, rework the SAC manual and test a three‑month cycle for selected policies so each includes SAC feedback before the DAC makes recommendations to the board.
“Part of our mission is to make sure that schools are soliciting feedback from their SACs and that the DAC pulls that up into district policy conversations,” Broin said.
Gorman and other DAC exec members described practical outreach methods: Google Forms and liaison‑led surveys for homework policy input, targeted virtual trainings and coordination with district staff to hold a joint strategic plan, Unified Improvement Plan (UIP) and budget session for the DAC. The DAC also plans focused work on family engagement to recruit underrepresented parents (families receiving free/reduced‑price lunch and Hispanic/Latino families) and to strengthen a pipeline from SACs to DAC membership.
Board members asked about data and transparency. Member Medler and others pushed for clearer budgeting information for SACs; DAC leaders said they will develop guiding questions to help SACs analyze school resource allocations and discretionary funding (PTO/P TA funds) in relation to strategic priorities.
Superintendent Anderson and several board members praised the DAC’s outreach and recommended continued collaboration between school leaders, SACs and the DAC. Anderson said the district values DAC input and will work with the committee to pilot the district‑level data session and family engagement efforts.
Next steps: DAC staff will refine the membership slate for board approval, finalize the homework survey instruments for SAC use, and return with progress and specific recommendations as the policy cycles proceed.
