Avery County approves multiple grants and budget amendments, including school-device payment and sheriff vehicle appropriation

Kevin Huggins, speaking for the county finance office, presented a series of grants and budget amendments for the board’s approval.
Items approved by voice vote included a $57,005 High Country Council of Governments grant for senior-services kitchen equipment; a $25,000 special state allocation for rental assistance to the Department of Social Services; a $20,000 Dogwood Health Trust grant to expand digital opportunities; and insurance reimbursements to the sheriff’s office totaling $13,523.02 for vehicle repairs or replacements.
The board also approved a $150,000 appropriation to purchase three sheriff’s vehicles to take advantage of current discounts, and a $407,461.20 budget amendment to cover the first installment on a leased fleet of 1:1 devices for Avery County Schools after the county received a signed contract. Huggins said the move is intended to provide students with devices and that the county had previously agreed to fund the lease.
A veterans-services grant of $18,288.97 through the NCDMVA county veterans office program was accepted to support equipment, supplies and marketing for that office.
What’s next: The board approved all items by voice vote. Finance staff will process the budget amendments and proceed with purchases and grant accounting; the county indicated vehicles are intended for next fiscal year procurement but are ordered now to obtain discounts.
