Batavia athletics staff highlight sectional championships, state titles and 500th win for Coach Braske

Athletics staff Joel Reed and Brent Brace presented a year-in-review to the Batavia City School District Board, highlighting team and individual accomplishments across fall, winter and spring seasons and noting the districts role in hosting Section 5 events.
"So first thing we're gonna do is just highlight some team highlights from throughout the year," Reed said as he reviewed sectional and state-level results. He noted multiple sectional championship appearances across sports and that track teams and individual athletes produced numerous sectional champions.
Key highlights cited by staff included: sectional championships for girls and boys indoor and outdoor track and field; boys basketball Monroe County Division I Conference championship and a semifinal run; hockey and football sectional final appearances; multiple individual sectional champions; state qualifiers and state champions including Sheldon Seiberlings second consecutive shot put state title (a throw of 61 feet, 5 inches) and Cooper Kneznys state pole vault title; and a 4x100 state championship in Class B. Staff also noted that the district hosted Section 5 dual championships for wrestling and a Class B outdoor track and field state qualifier that included 19 schools.
Reed and Brace emphasized academic success among athletes: "We had 268 student athletes that qualified as individual scholar athletes," Reed said, explaining the criteria and noting several teams met the 75% threshold necessary for recognition as a School of Excellence.
They also celebrated Coach Buddy Braske, who reached his 500th career win on Jan. 24 in a close 83-79 game against East Ridge, and reviewed his long career milestones.
Board members asked about multi-sport participation and noted a cohort dip in participation among current tenth-graders; athletics staff attributed some of that decline to pandemic-era disruptions and expressed optimism about rising numbers in younger cohorts. The presentation concluded with thanks to volunteer and support staff and recognition of the student-athletes who will graduate this year.
