Commissioners approve recognition letter and discuss living-wage implications

The Halifax County Board approved a letter recognizing the long service of Pastor Dr. Florean Bell to New Hope Apostolic Church, a packet item the board authorized after a motion by Commissioner Myers and a second recorded in the transcript as Commissioner Redden.
Separately, commissioners discussed the county’s compensation study and the prospect of raising the minimum hourly wage for county employees. Commissioner Silva pressed the board to consider a living wage of $18 an hour. County Manager Bill Denton and other commissioners cautioned that raising the minimum would create pay compression — requiring broader, across-the-board adjustments — and said staff recommended a salary floor so that no county employee would earn under $30,000. Denton said staff will review revenue projections later in the year to analyze the fiscal impact of any raises.
The finance director presented six budget amendments earlier in the meeting; the board approved those amendments by voice vote with a motion from Commissioner Barbers and a second from Vice Chair Davis.
The board adjourned and scheduled its next meeting for July 7, 2025, at 9:30 a.m.
