Board reviews YMCA membership proposal, swim program and student service-learning project

Greensville County — At its Sept. 8 meeting the Greensville County School Board heard several informational items about local partnerships and student projects, including a YMCA corporate membership proposal, a YMCA swim program schedule for Greensville Elementary School and a student service-learning project called 'Clear Space Clear Mind.'

A YMCA representative (identified in the transcript as Dr. Torgerson) outlined a corporate membership program that would offer discounts of about 20–30% for groups while noting a one-time joiner fee for employers (examples in the presentation included $350 for employer groups of 10–99, $450 for larger groups and $500 for very large employers). The presenter said current employees could opt into the offering and that pool access would cost an additional $22.50 per month per membership unit. "So the discounts are actually closer to 20%, 25%, and even 30%," the presenter said.

A YMCA program representative (identified as Hi Jones in the transcript) described a swim program slated to run Oct. 1–Nov. 5 and said the school system will provide transportation; two classes at a time will travel, permission slips are being collected, and school staff will supervise alongside YMCA staff to avoid dismissal delays.

Miss Harrison presented the Clear Space Clear Mind service-learning project, reporting that 21 dual-enrollment seniors helped reorganize central-office spaces, worked with transportation and facilities staff, and earned up to 15 community-service hours.
