Cromwell officials report strong internal gains; state-held test scores not yet public

Cromwell School District officials on Monday told the board that internal student-assessment results show substantial gains for students enrolled on district campuses, but the state is still withholding the official, validated scores.

District staff said the numbers presented at the meeting reflect only students who attend Cromwell Public Schools campus classrooms and do not include outplaced students whose results are reconciled later by the state. "We can't share exact numbers with you" until the state completes its reconciliation, a district administrator said, adding the district will distribute state-validated results as soon as they are released publicly.

Board members debated whether to receive the full accountability dataset at once or "chunk" the information across meetings. Several members said they preferred seeing the complete set together to understand trends across grades and tests, with a follow-up meeting for detailed questions and building-level breakdowns. "I kinda like to see it all together because I like to get the complete picture," one board member said.

Administrators explained how they analyze results: by year-over-year proficiency percentages and cohort tracking (following a group by grade across years), and by comparing classroom-level teacher data with statewide assessments. Staff said they will include comparative data with other districts when the state releases its information, expected in the coming weeks.

The board asked for a fuller presentation in the fall and that staff highlight whether teachers are seeing these gains in classroom practice. The district committed to provide the state-validated scores and a more detailed packet once the state makes them public.
