Cottage Grove Police honor Officer Matt Callahan with Purple Heart

Chief Corey Chase presented Officer Matt Callahan with the Cottage Grove Police Department's Purple Heart for injuries Callahan sustained in the line of duty on Aug. 21, 2024. Chase told the council the incident involved a violent suspect damaging downtown businesses with a metal street sign pole and credited Callahan as the first officer on scene who, despite being hurt, helped bring the suspect into custody.
Chase said Callahan's injuries required emergency medical care and follow-up surgery in Portland, and that the officer missed time from work while recovering. "Without hesitation and with the highest level of courage, you moved swiftly to protect our community and bring the suspect into custody," Chase said while reading the recognition.
Family members and several fellow officers attended the council meeting to support Callahan as the department presented a Purple Heart ribbon and uniform pin. The chief closed by thanking Callahan and his family "on behalf of the city of Cottage Grove, your fellow officers, and the citizens you protect."
