The Sulphur City Council voted June 9 to accept two separate awards from the Louisiana Department of Treasury — $250,000 and $200,000 — to reimburse identified municipal projects, with stipulations that reimbursements be submitted by June 30, 2025.

During public hearings, resident Wendy Wingate asked whether the amounts had already been spent and whether the city could meet the tight deadline. City staff (Miss Thornton) said the notices were received recently and described the awards as reimbursement for projects "we've already approved" and said staff was coordinating with the city’s engineering firm to select eligible projects and pursue any available deadline extensions.

Wingate pressed the council to prioritize projects such as senior‑center improvements; staff responded that projects already in the budget and previously approved are being targeted for reimbursement, but noted some other recipients statewide were seeking extensions and the city was monitoring that process.

Councilors moved, seconded and passed the ordinances on roll call votes. Staff said the awards are not capital outlay funds and that the administration will identify eligible expenditures and submit reimbursement requests within the required time frame.

Next steps: staff will finalize the project list eligible for reimbursement, file required paperwork with the Department of Treasury and update the council on timing and any extension requests.
