Star police report: crashes rise, K-9 Luna helps seize small drug amounts

Chief Hessing reported six person crimes, five property crimes and nine society (drug-related) crimes in June; he said the majority of drug charges were marijuana-related, with one cocaine case detected. The department logged 400 calls for service, 2,414 proactive policing actions (self-initiated stops and community contacts) and eight arrests for the month, including two DUIs and one warrant arrest.
A notable operational statistic was a rise in police responses to crashes: the department responded to 41 crashes in June compared with 30 the prior month and 29 in the like month the previous period. "I don't know what caused that, but it did kinda pique my interest a little bit," Hessing said.
Chief Hessing also reported K-9 Luna made six deployments during the month, seizing about 0.7 grams of cocaine and 23.7 grams of marijuana. The department issued 101 citations in June and noted increasing citations in areas of Star that border Ada County. Hessing said average code-3 (lights-and-siren) response time in Star was 3 minutes, 6 seconds—below the department's goal of under four minutes.
Council members briefly discussed code enforcement interactions and community engagement; no formal council action resulted from the report.
