The Herington City Commission approved an easement agreement and authorized a $32,546 raw waterline project to reroute and replace an older water line.
City staff described an expansion project that requires bypassing an older raw water line near the railroad and tying into an east-side line to avoid a section that leads to an out-of-service basin. Staff said the city negotiated with the adjacent property owner, who agreed to fencing removal and to accept the filled area; staff said the city will deed that section of property to the owner once work is complete, with staff targeting completion and deed transfer by 2027.
Public works staff explained the technical challenge of an older line sitting 12–14 feet deep and noted repeated past digs and soil disturbance; crews may need a contractor for deep repairs but believe much of this reroute can be done by city crews. The commission voted unanimously to approve the easement agreement and then to authorize the raw waterline project, which staff said will be paid from the water production and water distribution budgets.
The staff presentation also noted that the city’s usual supplier (in nearby MacPherson) stocks Corning pipe, which can reduce lead times. The commission’s formal action authorized staff to proceed with purchasing materials and performing the work, with a $32,546 cost cited at the meeting.
What the authorization covers The vote authorizes staff to purchase materials and use in-house crews to reroute and repair the raw waterline; the water production/distribution budgets will cover the cost. The commission also approved the related easement/deed process to transfer the old alignment to the adjacent property owner once filled and graded.
