Board hears curriculum, CTE, reading and fine-arts updates; over 100 third graders signed for intercession reading week

The Chief Academic Officer told the board about recent and upcoming curriculum and enrichment activities across the district.
On career and technical education, the officer described a hands-on financial-literacy exercise at Matvey High School in which 10th graders used a simulated "Mad City Money" folder outlining a fictional life and financial decisions. "They had a really, cool authentic experience with financial literacy," the officer said.
Elementary and middle school teachers have reviewed state-approved math series and individual schools will vote on adoption in the coming weeks; the board was told the district will request board approval for the schools' choices at the March meeting. Intercession programming, called a "February reading adventure week," will focus on third graders and will operate at five sites (Sherrill Intermediate, Pageland Elementary, Matvey Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, and Ruby Elementary); the officer said more than 100 students countywide are registered to participate and that some principals personally reached out to families to enroll students.
The officer also announced arts and community events: a March All County Fine Arts Festival, an arts showcase at Chirral High School on March 6 at 6:30 p.m., and a job fair on March 8 at Palmetto Learning Center. The board heard about a teacher grant award: Melanie Cole received an Arts Commission School Art Support grant to purchase sound equipment.
Board members asked whether third graders' participation was voluntary and how the program compared to previous years; the officer said participation is based on teacher/principal outreach and that current participation is higher than in the past. The officer said summer school will provide another opportunity for student assistance.
The district also recognized spelling-bee winners: Gus Snipes (Matvey High, eighth grader) and runner-up Kate Wilson Kollwitz (Sherrill Intermediate, fifth grader).
