Chase County commissioners voted Aug. 29 to purchase a quick‑attach brush mower and an industrial grapple for the county skid steer and discussed related transportation and trailer needs.
During a lengthy road and bridge briefing, staff described missing or irreparable attachments — a broken gravel bucket, worn brush‑mower components and a failed grapple. A staff member presented vendor pricing and recommended a Skid Pro commercial‑grade combo quote for a grapple and mower; one vendor quote for both items was discussed at about $12,000 (quote pages shown in meeting materials). After commissioners discussed repair history, equipment scheduling and transport options, the chair moved that the county proceed with the Quick Attach vendor for the mower and grapple. "I'll make a motion that we move forward with the quick attach company for a mega mower brush cutter and a quick draw industrial grapple," the chair said; the motion was seconded and carried.
Commissioners also debated transport solutions, including buying a heavier gooseneck trailer or acquiring a used single‑axle KDOT truck offered by the city of Cottonwood, and noted the county’s current skid‑loader is a 2020 model nearing the end of its planned useful life. Staff said a replacement skid steer is likely to be planned for next year’s budget; in the near term, commissioners discussed leasing or pooling trailers and using a staff member’s trailer to bridge the gap this winter.
What's next: procurement staff will collect final quotes, confirm repair and vendor warranties, and present purchase details and financing options in a future staff report.
