Boerne ISD trustees outline board duties and candidate filing calendar ahead of May election

Board President Garrett Wilson opened a board candidate workshop to explain what it means to serve on the Boerne ISD Board of Trustees and to share filing logistics for the upcoming election.

"The role of the board is not to be administrative. It's governance," Wilson said as he described trustees' primary responsibilities: oversight and governance, setting the budget, establishing local policy, and hiring the superintendent.

Wilson gave prospective candidates practical guidance: expect roughly 10–12 hours a month for board duties (including meetings, committees and event attendance), attend two TASB training conferences annually (typically multi‑day), serve on committees and maintain a high standard of ethics. He noted trustees sign a code of ethics annually and recommended reviewing the board operating procedures and local policy before running.

Key dates and administrative guidance were provided: filing opened Jan. 15, the last day to file for open places (Place 4 and Place 5) is Feb. 14, the last day to register to vote is April 3, early voting is April 22–29, and election day is May 3. Wilson directed prospective filers to contact Miss Richardson at the district office to pick up a filing packet and forms; he also said campaign finance reports must be filed and will be posted on the BISD website.

Wilson emphasized teamwork and community engagement as core expectations for trustees and encouraged candidates to consider time, training, teamwork and adherence to the code of ethics when deciding to run.
