Tallmadge board approves minutes, financials and multiple service agreements

At its May 21 meeting, the Tallmadge City Schools Board of Education voted to approve routine business and several service contracts the district said are necessary for special education and other student services.
The board approved minutes from its April 16 and March 31 meetings after a motion and second. The treasurer’s recommended financial reports for March 2025 were approved; trustees discussed timing differences in property tax settlements that can make month‑to‑month comparisons misleading.
The board approved a primary service plan agreement (Option A) for fiscal year 2026 with the Summit Educational Service Center, which the district said provides part‑time specialists — audiology, occupational and physical therapy and gifted services — to multiple districts. Staff estimated the district’s ESC‑provided services cost between $250,000 and $300,000 annually.
A consortium agreement and lease with the Summit ESC to provide preschool services for children with disabilities was approved for FY2026. District staff said the program runs two AM/PM classrooms this year and intends to add a third next year as demand grows.
Members approved contracts for alternative placements and specialized providers, including Educational Alternatives and the LEAP program, noting modest rate increases attributable to inflation. The board also approved a contract with Wings of Change Therapy for the 2025‑26 school year.
The board took several out‑of‑town overnight field trips (items 4.5–4.9) by consensus, including Tallmadge High School’s cross‑country camp July 29–Aug. 2, 2025. Personnel items 5.1–5.23 were adopted by consent; the superintendent highlighted one‑year teacher renewals, supplemental assignments and improved substitute coverage after shifting staffing arrangements.
Several retirements and recognitions were read into the record and approved as part of consent items, including administrators and long‑serving teachers taking an early‑retirement incentive.
All listed motions and contracts passed by voice vote or unanimous 'Aye' responses where recorded in the minutes; no defeated motions were recorded.
