San Benito Consolidated Independent School District trustees opened their April 16 meeting by recognizing more than 220 students for regional, state and national achievements in career and technical education, athletics, choir and band. The board also approved a proclamation designating April 2025 as the Month of the Military Child.
The district read long lists of student winners across programs including the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show, TAFE, SkillsUSA and Business Professionals of America. At the livestock show the board highlighted two students who together raised about $56,000 at auction, a sum the board said will help students with college expenses. "The animals are the tools. The purpose are the kids," ag sponsor Eddie Garcia told trustees as he thanked teachers and families who support the FFA program.
Other recognitions included middle-school TCDA All-State vocalists, All‑District volleyball selections and San Benito High School powerlifting qualifiers and medalists. Staff and interim directors for band and indoor percussion were acknowledged for state-level placements.
Board member Mr. Gonzales read a proclamation affirming the district’s commitment to military‑connected students and the district’s pursuit of TEA Purple Star campus designations; the proclamation asked community members to “demonstrate support for military connected families by wearing purple throughout the month of April” and pointed to events planned for April 25, 2025. Trustees carried the proclamation later in the meeting.
The district said it will produce a feature on the two livestock champions and the FFA program for the district’s KSBG TV channel. No policy or budget action was taken during the recognitions portion; the items were ceremonial and advisory in nature.
