The Gatesville ISD board voted to appoint architectural firm Huckabee to design a package of facilities improvements the district plans to propose in a May 2026 bond election.
Board presenters described a bond that would fund renovation and addition work at the junior high to return sixth grade to that campus, replacement or renovation of the aging field house, construction of a small press box on the current visitor side and other ancillary items including potential turf for baseball/softball fields and track repairs. District staff said the board has bond capacity—partly from paying down debt early and a recent $500,000 principal payment—so the district may be able to fund the projects without raising the tax rate.
Representatives from Huckabee attended the meeting. The firm was described by board presenters as responsive during the selection process and as having produced detailed, reasonable cost estimates compared with other bidders. Trustees asked about next steps for community engagement and campaign organization ahead of the bond election; staff said committees and communications planning will begin soon.
The appointment was moved and seconded during the meeting and carried by voice vote. Staff will return with scope documents, estimated timelines and recommended community-engagement work to support the bond effort.
Funding and next steps: Trustees emphasized the need to present clear project scopes and cost estimates to the community, including visuals and prioritization, before formally calling the bond. No final bond authorization occurred at the meeting; the action taken was the professional-services appointment for design work.
