Resident raises sharp water-bill increase; superintendent thanks commissioners for nursing funding

During the public comment period, Tom Plaskett told commissioners his most recent water bill rose from about $140 to $285 a month and said he traced the change to CFPUA budget allocations that included a 59% year-to-year irrigation rate increase. He said his background in cost accounting led him to question how irrigation costs were allocated across customers and asked the board to examine the issue.
Chair William E. Rivenbark and a commissioner responded that CFPUA is an appropriate forum for those concerns and noted the next CFPUA meeting is scheduled for Oct. 8 at 9 a.m. at the Government Center; the chair invited Mr. Plaskett to discuss the matter further after the meeting.
Separately, Dr. Barnes, the New Hanover County superintendent of schools, briefed the board for about a minute to thank commissioners for revisiting their decision and fully funding the school nursing program. Dr. Barnes said the nurses and staff appreciate the board’s action and that the funding decision benefits students and school staff.
Next steps: Mr. Plaskett was directed to the CFPUA board meeting for detailed review; school nursing program funding was acknowledged and no further county action was announced at the meeting.
