Board honors longtime county employees and welcomes new hires

The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners recognized multiple retiring and milestone employees in a program that highlighted decades of public service.
Chair William E. Rivenbark noted four retirees who collectively represent more than 120 years of public service. Retirees recognized included Tara Duckworth (15 years with New Hanover County parks and gardens; 31 years in local government), Margaret Burns (15 years with county Social Services; 35 years total), Doug Perry (27 years, New Hanover County Sheriff's Office) and Georgia Morris (33 years, Department of Social Services). Remarks described major projects, leadership roles and emergency-response contributions.
The board also honored employees reaching multi-year milestones: five-year recognition for Gwendolyn Brown, 10-year recognition for Heather Yanko (Cape Fear Museum), 15 years for Rebecca Pierce (Senior Resource Center), 20 years for Steven Sims (Information Technology), 25 years for Alice Moore (Social Services), and a 40-year service recognition for Gloria Bowden (Department of Social Services). New hires in New Hanover County Fire Rescue (Omar Perez, Christopher Keesler) were introduced to the board.
Commissioners praised the retirees’ and milestone employees’ contributions to parks, social services, public safety and other county operations. A photo opportunity followed.
