Board to form committee to review Memorial Stadium dedications under policy 72.50

The DeWitt Public Schools Board discussed a recommendation to form a committee to review Memorial Stadium dedication applications under board policy 72.50. The superintendent recommended the committee include the high school principal, the athletic director, at least one community member and at least one current or former coach; the committee will evaluate applications against the policy’s criteria and provide a recommendation to the full board.

A board member explained policy 72.50 requires that honorees be deceased for more than one year and have made a significant impact on the district and students. One board member (Speaker 6) asked whether the recommended committee was too athletics-focused and whether other stadium users should be represented. Board members responded that the composition was a recommendation and could be broadened; several members expressed support for a representative process and some volunteered to serve.

The board closed the discussion and said the board president would assemble the committee and bring recommendations back to the full board for action.
