Board awaits final University of Iowa athletic-training contract; questions remain on hours, event coverage and signature status

The Clear Creek Amana board discussed the status and scope of an athletic-training services contract with the University of Iowa that the district had tentatively approved in June.

Board members said the version the University submitted had been returned to university legal counsel after the district’s attorneys suggested edits; administration reported that the most recent draft included a termination clause and other language not in the earlier informal proposal. Speaker 1 said the district had not yet signed a final document and described current services provided under an informal or "good faith" understanding while legal review is pending.

Speakers raised questions about how many trainers would be present on-site, whether the contract matches the proposal (which had detailed items such as coverage for six football games and specific weekly hours), and whether the contract should list an explicit number of weekly hours. Speaker 5 said the approved June proposal included specific items such as 30 hours per week during the school year, but that language was not clearly transposed into the current contract draft. The contract’s Exhibit B (coverage requirements) and event lists were discussed as the place where regular hours and event coverage are specified.

Board members also asked whether the University trainers attend away contests; members said experience suggested trainers attend some away events but the district typically expects the home team to provide coverage when available. The board asked administration to circulate the final, university-approved contract for review and to notify board leadership when it becomes available.

Next steps: administration will share the final contract with the board and schedule review with board leadership; no payment has been made pending completion of the signed contract.
