McAlester council adopts amendment relaxing some off-street parking standards

Miss Cookton, a staff member, presented the draft ordinance and said it is intended as a "Band Aid" fix to address recurring parking-variance requests to the board of adjustment. She told the council the planning commission reviewed the draft on Aug. 19 and unanimously recommended approval, asking only that parking stall length be increased from 18 to 19 feet to accommodate larger vehicles.
Councilor Beatty moved approval and a roll-call vote returned unanimous "Yes" votes. The ordinance does not include an emergency clause and "will take effect in 30 days," the mayor said.
The change is framed as a temporary fix while staff consider a broader overhaul of off-street parking standards; Miss Cookton said the draft aims to reduce the need for repeated variances while avoiding undue impacts on property owners and businesses.
The council did not receive public testimony during the public hearing on the ordinance. Staff and council members said planning commission input and vehicle-size considerations informed the change.
The council's action amends the city's off-street parking rules and was recorded as approved on the public docket. The ordinance will become operative 30 days after adoption unless otherwise specified by later council action.
