Ishpeming council approves land negotiation, staff changes and several event permits

Ishpeming—s council approved multiple administrative and budget items affecting city operations and land holdings.

Council authorized staff to proceed with negotiating an agreement to purchase approximately 1,107 acres of Cleveland-Cliffs property at a proposed purchase price of $239,753, pending financing and due diligence. Finance staff said a relationship bank will prepare financing terms once a tentative agreement is reached.

On fund management, finance director Grant proposed folding the Brasswire Campground fund into the general fund beginning Jan. 1, 2026, to eliminate an annual deficit filing and better reflect operating responsibilities; council approved the deficit-elimination approach. Related project funds (Partridge Creek compost and the Teal Lake/Perks construction fund) were reported as reconciled or closeout-ready with staff authorization to notify the state.

Council converted the part-time zoning/planning administrator position to a full-time Planning Director role, an action expected to increase costs by about $28,000 annually including benefits and intended to support redevelopment-ready certification and related workload.

The council also authorized several special-event permits (including an International Overdose Awareness Day event and a powwow at Lake Bancroft) contingent on required insurance and site sketches, and approved repair of an aerial fire truck for $3,340.

These votes were taken by voice and roll-call as recorded; many of the items instruct staff to complete financing, sketches, insurance or final contract review before final execution.
