Ishpeming votes to join West Michigan public-sector insurance pool, council names trustees

Mike Haggerty of Gallagher told the council the West Michigan public‑sector insurance pool has been operating for about 20 years and that moving the city’s primary plan into the pool would likely reduce the city’s projected increase. "On your more popular plan, the pool is 10 and a half percent less," Haggerty said, an estimate he translated to roughly $68,000 on the city’s platinum plan and about $73,000 overall when compared to a 15% Michigan average increase.
Haggerty described programs available to pool members (diabetes reversal, Teladoc, specialty second‑opinion services and a Mayo Clinic partnership) and said the pool is governed by the Department of Insurance and Financial Services and requires a three‑year commitment.
Councilors voted to adopt Resolution 24‑2025 and to designate the City Manager and Deputy City Manager as Trustee and Alternate Trustee for the pool. Staff said dental and vision plans would remain unchanged and that the city’s renewal date would shift to Jan. 1 if the pool transition proceeds.
Councilors noted state budget uncertainty could affect overall costs, but said the resolution provides a governance framework to proceed and to realize potential savings and expanded networks for employees.
