El Campo to reimburse hospital up to $18,000 for ER canopy to accommodate taller ambulances

The El Campo City Council on July 28 approved Resolution R2025-41 to reimburse El Campo Memorial Hospital for modifications to its emergency room loading area so the city’s new ambulances, which have higher boxes, can unload patients under cover.
Staff explained that the new ambulances arriving at year-end have boxes about four inches taller than the current fleet; crews currently lower liquid-spring airbags to clear the canopy and sometimes scrape the canopy. Staff proposed funding a dock extension and a approximately 10-foot awning and recommended a not-to-exceed reimbursement of $18,000, funded from the city’s surplus/billing revenue. Staff said the hospital solicited multiple quotes — some in the $60,000 range — and obtained a lower local quote near $13,000–$14,000; staff included electrical work and contingencies in the $18,000 not-to-exceed figure.
Council members raised concerns that extending the dock could temporarily disrupt hospital operations during construction. Staff said the hospital’s alternate ramp would remain available for patient access while short-term work proceeds. A motion to approve R2025-41 carried on council voice vote.
