Chatham County Schools scores highly in Cognia review; board recognizes students and arts programs

Chatham County Schools reported strong results from a recent Cognia accreditation review during the June 2 board meeting, and the board used the session to recognize students, educators and community partners for academic, arts and leadership accomplishments.
Dr. Amanda Moran presented the draft Cognia report, saying the district received a high IEQ score and that most review areas scored at the top levels. In the presentation, district staff reported an IEQ score of 383 out of 400 and noted that the district's scores were above the national network average; the report is subject to final approval by Cognia later in June.
District staff also highlighted arts accomplishments: Chatham County Schools and Guilford County Schools were recognized as the only North Carolina districts to earn the "Best Communities for Music Education" designation, and the West Chatham concert band (a combined ensemble of five schools) earned a superior rating at a recent adjudication.
The meeting included several student recognitions. Chris Poston and Jessica Pacione introduced students inducted into the North Carolina Association of Student Councils Hall of Fame and named a May champion of character; student speakers Giovanni Sierra Rojas and Kyle Stinson described how district programs helped them secure scholarships and leadership opportunities. "This scholarship gives me a full ride to college," Giovanni said, describing his Odyssey Scholarship award.
The district said the Cognia draft will be publicly released once Cognia completes final approval and that certificates will be available to schools this summer.
