Chariho committee debates formal evaluation rubric for superintendent

A proposal to create a formal, scored rubric and subcommittee to enhance the superintendent’s evaluation drew lengthy discussion at the Chariho School Committee’s July 15 meeting.

Member Tyler Champlin proposed forming a subcommittee composed of school‑committee representatives to build a scoring rubric, gather staff and community feedback, and formalize how the committee sets and tracks superintendent goals. Champlin said a scored rubric would create a documented, nonpartisan record of performance and asked that the tool enable staff and community input.

Several members supported the goal of clearer, data‑driven evaluation but disagreed on process. Member Jess and others said the full school committee should be central to the work rather than relegating evaluation design to a small subcommittee. Member Craig voiced concern that changing the process during a period of political contention could raise the perception of moving goalposts; he urged caution.

Superintendent Gina (who confirmed she is evaluated annually under an existing process) said she welcomes feedback and that elements of administrative evaluation already exist; staff offered to provide the historical rubric and prior evaluation materials for committee review. Members agreed that the committee should consider the proposal as a future agenda item and that any new approach should focus on measurable outcomes while allowing room for qualitative input.

No motion was made to form a subcommittee at the July 15 meeting; members requested additional materials and proposed bringing the issue back for a formal vote or discussion at a subsequent meeting.
