Catawba County school board hears update on possible Newton‑Conover merger, members press for clearer communication

"I was getting phone calls the week before asking my opinion on the merger, and I knew nothing about the merger," said an unidentified board member (speaker 2). Members said that disparity left some feeling caught off guard and urged the county and board leadership to ensure the board receives the same information at the same time.
Board members asked that the chair provide an update before the public comment period at the meeting and requested more transparency going forward. One member noted that county commissioners have decision authority over any structural change to county schools and that the board’s role is to be informed and prepared to respond to proposals or impacts on students and staff.
The chair said he and Dr. Stover had met with county commissioners and the county manager to hear the commissioners’ presentation and that the commissioners were still "conducting research into a merger," adding there was no set path toward a merger at that time. Board members asked staff to share any county materials they were provided and to notify the board in advance of any public meetings or town halls related to the topic.
The board did not take action on the matter at the meeting; members directed staff to continue monitoring the county’s work and to provide a consolidated briefing to the full board when more information is available.
