Superintendent reports 'good clean audit,' enrollment uptick and calendar planning

Superintendent Larson updated the Brandon Valley School District 49-2 Board of Education on several operational items including the FY25 audit, current enrollment, academic-calendar planning and school-safety procedures.
On the audit, Larson said the district completed the FY25 audit fieldwork Sept. 16–17 and characterized the exit interview as "a good clean audit," though he added the final audit report may be delayed while staff await federal guidance.
Larson reported the district's junior kindergarten through 12th-grade enrollment at 5,213 students, an increase of 82 students compared with last year. He told trustees that the enrollment figure is slightly higher than projections and should be neutral for the general fund.
Regarding reporting, Larson said the district's annual report has been filed and accepted by the South Dakota Department of Education and that the department plans to publicly release its state report-card data Oct. 24; the district plans a "state of the schools" address that will incorporate that information in November.
On safety and operations, the board heard that the district updated emergency-drill language to align with the Sioux Falls School District and local law enforcement, adopting terms such as secure rooms, shelter in place and lockdown for consistency across buildings. The safety committee also praised new crosswalks and revised pickup and parking at the middle school to improve student safety.
Larson also previewed staffing processes for the new Berkman Valley Elementary, saying the district will approve an administrative position and open certified and classified roles, and described the calendar-development timeline that would bring an initial recommendation in January with adoption at the board's second meeting in that cycle.
No formal actions were taken on these operational updates; trustees moved on to the boundary approval and consent items after questions were invited.
