Bentrude, a Bethel University student and member of the University of Minnesota ROTC program, told commissioners the scene felt "surreal" and described applying two tourniquets to Ricks’s legs after discovering heavy bleeding. "I saw that he was bleeding from both legs and the two tourniquets I had on each leg," Bentrude said. Ricks, who was present and addressed the board, said he was "just grateful for Jared and his quick reaction and saving my life on that day."
Sheriff Heck said both deputies on scene and treating doctors confirmed that the tourniquets and prompt action likely prevented a fatal outcome. The board recognized Bentrude’s actions with a formal award and posed for photos. The presentation concluded with well-wishes for Ricks’s recovery and thanks to first responders.
